Block Printing with Primary Press Glasgow

  • Print Clan 241 High Street Glasgow, G4 0QR Scotland (map)

Join Jemima from Primary Press Glasgow in this four hour block printing workshop at the Print Clan studio.

Block Printing is a tactile and joyful technique which allows the printer to experiment and develop pattern designs quickly and intuitively. The day will begin using the simplest technique of relief printing, using potato prints to explore pattern making and motif design on paper.

In the afternoon you will work on developing a design using still life setups of fruit, vegetables & flowers as inspiration. You will be shown how to transfer your drawing to a lino block and how to carve your design, creating a reusable block to print with time and time again. Finally, you will print your design onto fabric to create your own unique interpretation of the still life.

What experience do I need?
This course is perfect for complete beginners in both relief and fabric printing, or as a refresher.

Equipment Provided:
All equipment including inks, lino blocks, potatoes, cutting tools, and drawing materials are provided. Each student will get an A3 piece of calico for their final print, but you are welcome to bring additional fabrics to print on it you wish. Natural fabrics such as plain cotton or linen give the best results.

Your Tutor:
Jemima Dansey-Wright is a textile designer and maker specialising in contemporary block and screen printed projects and small batch products and garments that she sells through @primarypressglasgow and @estd.barras. She enjoys making work that has an everyday use. Her work is often influenced by nature, food, organic forms and travel - aiming to capture a mood, sense or reference a memory or story and hold on to the spontaneous quality block print.

She is drawn to block print because of the textured marks this technique produces and the immediate and intuitive way artwork can be developed and applied to a range of surfaces and garments.
